Marston's PLC Enters FTSE4Good

This is particularly significant as achieving the expected standard is challenging, not least because the criteria continue to evolve to take into account responsible business practices around the world. In the September 2007 half-yearly review of membership conducted by the FTSE4Good Committee, we were the only new entrant from the travel and leisure sector. Along with Whitbread and JD Wetherspoon we are now amongst only a small number of UK FTSE pub companies who are in the FTSE4Good Index.
In order to qualify for inclusion into the index Marston's had to show that it met the appropriate criteria in a range of areas, including environmental and social issues. The FTSE4Good criteria is designed to reflect a broad consensus on what constitutes good corporate responsibility practice globally. In consideration of our application, the FTSE4Good Committee would have looked at our recent work on reducing the company's environmental impact as explained in our Environment Report 2007, available on the corporate website.
The inclusion in the Index reflects the hard work of the Environmental and Corporate Social Responsibility Committee, which is chaired by Marston's Pub Company MD Stephen Oliver, the active energy management systems operated in our breweries and the contribution made by our Energy Manager Bob Jauncey, which has resulted in energy savings at head offices and across the pub estate.
Stephen Oliver said: "We are thrilled with the news, which is a clear sign that we are on the right track. Hopefully everyone within the organisation has gained a greater understanding of the role that they can play - whether it's a major energy efficiency initiative or simply turning off lights.
"Our inclusion within the FTSE4Good is an important reflection on the company as a whole and indicates that staff have accepted a shared responsibility to these issues. We need to ensure that we continue to focus on these areas and identify additional improvements that we can make."
