John Sergeant Barging Around

In episode five of ‘Barging Around with John Sergeant’ to be shown on Friday 13th March at 9pm, John travels down the Trent and Mersey Canal from The Potteries and stops off at the iconic Victorian brewery on Shobnall Road for a tour of the famous Burton Union Room.

There he learns about Marston’s Pedigree from Marston’s Head Guide Meryl Jackson and the special way it’s brewed and fermented in oak barrels.

Before he leaves he takes part in a blind tasting in the Visitor’s Centre and discovers that a great Burton Pale Ale is the perfect accompaniment to the easy going, slow pace of life on the canals.

The filming for the programme took place last June and brewery staff were sworn to secrecy about the project. Meryl Jackson commented: “John really was the perfect gentleman and is just how you see him on TV – quick witted and self-deprecating. He loved the atmosphere in the Union Room and enjoyed the beers even more.”
